Abstract | The reviewed book deals with philosophical, psychological and sociological themes and their application to a variety of disciplines. Its contents: Part I: Radical Constructivism (E. von Glasersfeld) and Social Constructivism (K. Gergen), with responses from J. Shotter and J. Richards; Part II: Information Processing (F. Steier), and Constructivism and Cybernetic Systems (R. Spiro et al.), with responses from K. Tomm and P. Thompson; Part III: Social Constructivism (H. Bauersfeld) and Sociocultural Approaches (J. Wertsch and Ch. Toma), with responses from C. Konold and J. Confrey. At the end of these 3 parts an overview, Analysis and Synthesis I, is offered by M. Bickhard. Part IV: Alternative Epistemologies in Language, Mathematics and Science Education and Part V: Alternative Epistemologies in Clinical, Mathematics and Science Education include papers and responses from a variety of authors. Analysis and Synthesis II, related to Parts IV and V, is offered by P. Ernest, and finally, Analysis and Synthesis III, from L. Steffe drawing on all parts, completes the book. This book review addresses the following aspects: Radical constructivism, social constructionism, the way of theory, Vygotskian theory, social constructivism, and the dilemma of practice. |
