Abstract | "So often new worthwhile initiatives are taken up with enthusiasm - only to be poorly implemented in haste and then abandoned when the results aren't what we expected. While social and emotional learning is one of the hottest topics today, there are countless approaches to it and little shared understanding. The premise of this book is that creating a shared understanding (and therefore implementation) of SEL begins with the school leader herself - with the way that she personally embodies the five core competencies. All of the texts and guidance for school leaders center around how to foster SEL in students, teachers, and school practices; no texts help leaders understand and apply SEL skills to their own personal development as leaders. In addition, we know that school leaders' roles are enormously complex, managing up and down a system fraught with challenges. There's very little support for them uniquely designed to address the nuances of their position. This book of daily learning and reflections aims to help school leaders understand and manifest the core SEL skills (as defined by the CASEL core competencies) throughout every aspect of their role. When leaders live out the five competencies (explored through "modules" in the book), it results in stronger relationships throughout the school, increases the school leader's credibility, engages stakeholders, builds more inclusive cultures, and models SEL for everyone in the community. Each week day, leaders will explore various aspects of each competency in the CASEL framework in a guided reflection of no more than 400 words. At just three minutes per day, this is a small investment that can have immeasurable benefits for everyone in the school system"--Provided by publisher. |
