AbstractWhat causes students to leave school? According to Azzam (2007), over 47% of students in the United States who drop out of school reported they did so because school was boring and irrelevant to their life situation. What can schools and teachers do to encourage students to stay in school? One possible solution may be to look at experiential learning processes and civic competencies, which help people perform in the workplace and adult life. Service-learning is a rich pedagogy that can make students excited about learning and in the process, enhance their grades ("Growing to Greatness," 2007). It provides a vehicle for students to connect with their communities, address problems, and by doing so, to become a part of the solution. Quality service-learning teaches students problem-solving, critical thinking, decision making, public speaking, teamwork, and how to interact with communities that are different from their own cultural membership (Basttistoni and Longo, 2007). A service-learning project designed to encourage skill development is described. (Contains 2 tables.) (ERIC).
