AbstractHumans, as social creatures, look to others for affiliation, support, and guidance while also having the capacity to offer something of value to someone in need (understanding, compassion, reassurance, hope, etc.). While offering such support can be easy, almost innate, for some and less natural for others, basic helping skills can be learned and strengthened in nearly everyone. This is not to say that using the basic skills necessary to help others in need is the same as taking responsibility for fixing the problems experienced by others. In all helping relationships, it is critical to consider the necessity of boundaries. Natural helpers need to pay attention to the limits of their expertise. This article describes the relationship between Carl Rogers's person-centered theory, as he outlined in a retrospective paper in 1974, and motivational interviewing developed by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, and provides some framework for how natural helpers can integrate the most salient aspects of each to help at-risk or vulnerable students.
