Abstract | Many book publishers are following developments in the e-book industry. In the long run, a great deal is at stake. While e-books address problems of inventory and delivery, restructuring distribution is expensive. Additionally, publishers want to know that their copyrighted books cannot be stolen, that is, duplicated or redistributed in e-book format. On the other end of the e-book spectrum are books out-of-copyright. E-book publishers of these materials have far less concern about the above issues because freely available e-books have open duplication and distribution. The commercial versus free access division is not necessarily contradictory, however, and this article guides readers through some of the more prominent developments and directions for the newly revived e-book industry.
