AbstractHow long does it take to form a habit? Recent research done at the University College London by Phillippa Lally and colleagues suggest it takes an average of sixty-six days to form a new habit. Other research indicates that rewards make habits easier to form, but it takes repetition to form a habit. A literature review conducted for Pearson Education, Inc. states, "Traditionally, educators consider intrinsic motivation to be more desirable and to result in better learning outcomes than extrinsic motivation." Yet, from the author's personal action research, while working with high school student library assistants and observing student library patrons, high school students also tend to be highly motivated by the extrinsic rewards of money and food. The author thinks that extrinsic rewards can be an effective way to spark building the library habit and shares some ideas for a school year. (ERIC).
