AbstractProfessional counselors have long been practicing in alcohol and drug treatment settings. However, only recently has the counseling field offered formal recognition of addictions counseling as a specialization through the implementation of accreditation standards for addiction counseling training programs. With the passage of the 2009 standards, the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) now explicitly recognizes and accredits programs that have an addictions counseling focus. Although the author believes that this move by CACREP is a step toward greater parity and professional competence within the counseling profession, it may also create unintended ethical dilemmas for addiction counselor trainees, counselor educators, and accredited addictions counseling programs. This article presents several of these possible ethical concerns and outlines recommendations for addressing issues that may arise. Two case studies illustrate possible unintended violations of ethical and training standards. (ERIC).
