| Abstract | Immigrant integration is a multidimensional process that involves both newcomers and the receiving community. Although the United States does not have a coherent policy of immigrant integration, several city- and state-wide efforts support immigrant integration, as do individual initiatives operating across states. In this article, the author begins by defining immigrant integration and discussing some of the key U.S. policies and efforts designed to promote civic engagement--efforts that involve both established residents and foreign-born newcomers. In the second section, the author highlights several exemplary efforts to support immigrant integration, adult education, and civic engagement. The examples are drawn from the author's work as a nonresident fellow with the National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, part of the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., a nonpartisan think tank. Through these examples, the author highlights practices of programs that have either won a $50,000 award or were highly rated in the E Pluribus Unum competition to honor exceptional initiatives that promote immigrant integration, a competition funded by the Kaplan Foundation and administered by the Migration Policy Institute.
