Abstract | This chapter focuses on religious institutions or the institutionalized church as an environment where older adults commonly engage as learners, primarily from a spiritual dimension but also within a secular context. It emphasizes the agency of older adults who learn in this specific cultural context in a range of modes for diverse purposes. While the spiritual domain of learning takes precedence in faith-based institutions, a holistic approach to understanding how and why older people conduct their lives reveals significant potential for learning in roles such as learner-teacher, parishioner, mentor, volunteer, and community activist. It is argued that faith-based institutions can provide seniors with considerable opportunities for later life learning. (ERIC). |
