Abstract | In this monograph, the authors focus on concrete approaches and tools that will assist educational leaders and educators in the creation of a genuinely inclusive campus culture. The first chapter, "The Changing Landscape and the Compelling Need for Diversity," provides an overview of forces that have historically inhibited the inclusion of women and minority faculty and staff in higher education. It then discusses how globalization has reshaped the landscape for higher education and created a compelling mandate for the attainment of inclusive campus environments. Next it examines the role of diversity as an intangible organizational capability linked to institutional excellence and quality. Finally, it introduces the frame of demography, diversity, and democracy that will embed reciprocal empowerment in the structures, culture, and practices of the university. In "Translating Principles into Practice," the authors suggest three areas of consideration that link the purposes of the university with diversity and globalization: (1) institutional mission; (2) the educational process; and (3) talent management. "Mapping the Terrain for Inclusion and Bridging the Gaps" provides a road map to self-assessment of institutional diversity that identifies significant areas of review and a concrete process of measurement. "Orchestrating the Process of Cultural Change" introduces specific research-based approaches that will assist the university in its efforts to actualize reciprocal empowerment and overcome existing barriers to diversity. These approaches are designed to align practices, attitudes, and behaviors with institutional values, reinforce organizational learning in terms of diversity, stimulate the formation and growth of new mental models, and promote heightened engagement. In "A Toolkit for Operationalizing Reciprocal Empowerment," the authors introduce representative tools and practices that will assist the university in the transformational change needed to attain reciprocal empowerment. The last chapter, "Reprise: Recommendations and Implications," offers recommendations for operationalizing reciprocal empowerment in the workplace.
