Abstract | Revisiting AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) restarts the "panic of loss" characterizing the author's youth. The author argues that the 25th anniversary of ACT UP marks the failure to consider Raymond Williams's "structure of feeling". Williams counterposes this structure against falsely viewing the past as formalized into something specific and closed. Locating ACT UP as a singularity may feel familiar, but it poses a risk of false consciousness. The useful and even crucial construct "ACT UP's twenty-fifth anniversary" also marks the endurance of one way people organized resistance against AIDS-phobia. In this article, the author talks about ACT UP as a structure of feeling. (Contains 33 notes.) (ERIC). |
