AbstractThe francophone world has always been at the center of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. From the mythical (French Canadian) "patient zero," Gaetan Dugas, to Rock Hudson's flight to Paris for medical treatment and the blaming of Haiti for AIDS, as well as the close relationships between Belgian and French and their former African colonies, underscores the centrality of the French-speaking world to HIV/AIDS. So as one looks back upon ACT-UP, 25 years later, it is important that people not ignore Act Up-Paris. In reflecting upon Act Up-Paris one can think about what lessons about AIDS activism people learn from the French lessons, without the painful "dictees"! French lessons are always plural, as there is never a singular lesson to learn. Act Up-Paris was founded in 1989, the year of the bicentennial celebrations of the French Revolution. On the 25th anniversary of ACT UP, the author aims to explore the lessons of Act Up-Paris. (Contains 20 notes.) (ERIC).
