Abstract | The Accelerated Reader program from Renaissance Learning Inc. is a popular program implemented in elementary and middle schools across the country that encourages students to read and monitors their progress in the program. Despite its widespread use and popularity, there have been some questions about the program's effectiveness at increasing independent reading and promoting lifelong reading. Chesapeake (VA) Public Schools' Office of Program Evaluation conducted an evaluation of the program during the 2006-2007 school year in response to concerns raised by parents and students. This article presents their findings and their recommendations regarding program usage moving forward. (Contains 1 table.) (As Provided). |
