AbstractThe author travelled to Jaipur, India, in June 2009 to run a project with a group of 12 young runaways at the Bal Basera Centre, a transitional shelter for boys under the age of 18. The Centre sits within the Jaipur Municipal Police force compound, just a few yards away from the City Railway Station. Bal Basera, or "transit home" in Hindi, was designated by the state government of Rajasthan as the centre of operations for Taabar, a Jaipurian non-governmental organisation offering services and outreaching to runaway boys. In 2006, the Bal Basera Centre became fully operational--creating a place for homeless boys to temporarily live, learn, and recuperate. The Bal Basera Project introduced the potential for home to be made in different spaces, reflecting that belonging is engendered by acts of place-making, and that home is rooted in interaction. If "home" is reinforced by building attachments to the locations in which it is placed and belonging through positive interaction with others, then the body is central to a reciprocal relationship between perception and action, building and dwelling. Here, the author reflects on one particular workshop, which invited participants to draw portraits of their body, on their body. Rather than trying to mine memories of unattainable homes, the author hoped to kindle a recognition of the body as a home for different places and place-memories. (Contains 5 figures.) (ERIC).
