AbstractThis author became intrigued by the idea that her generation, who had grown up reaping the benefits of second-wave feminism, might differ from previous generations in their attitudes toward women. What was unclear was how this period of progress might have combined with feminist backlash in affecting subsequent generations' responses to typical measures like the Attitudes Toward Women Scale, which was itself the product of a particular historical and social context. But the author was stymied by a methodological dilemma: How could one assess generational change in attitudes toward women, especially without direct access to the attitudes of previous generations? To resolve this dilemma, she devised a new statistical tool, the method of cross-temporal meta-analysis (CTMA). Interest in generational change remains high. Additional CTMAs on generational changes in personality traits and behavior should add to the literature by finding changes in previously unexamined scales and updating past analyses to recent decades. Other authors are interested in applications; some faculty are now giving advice on how educators can manage entitlement among students. Feminist scholars face the task of developing educational programs and strategies that empower girls and women without encouraging detrimental levels of self-focus that reach the level of narcissism and unrealistic expectations. The author contends that instead of teaching self-esteem (which often ends up encouraging narcissism instead), one should focus on balancing the highly beneficial aspects of femininity (caring, compassion) with a strong emphasis on gender equality.
