| Abstract | As an observer of the gaming situation, the author watched intently to understand how two boys' actions helped them succeed at "Band Hero," and she realized that their movements were both ways of being and ways of learning. These eighth-grade boys went beyond the scope and requirements of standard game play and appeared to employ specific Discourses (Gee, 2001, 2008, 2011), or "ways of talking, listening, writing, reading, acting, interacting, believing, valuing, and feeling (and using various objects, symbols, images, tools, and technologies) in the service of enacting meaningful socially situated identities and activities." This chapter examines the behavior that is tied to gamers' virtual characters as a means to distinguish the association between gamers' onscreen and offscreen Discourses. In so doing, this discussion considers the ways gamers demonstrate their understanding of self in relation to the video game and the real social environment. (Contains 2 figures and 1 note.)
