AbstractPlaying with food, painting and sculpting with it, begins in the high chair. As movement progresses, children take their art under the counter, exploring cookware and creating with pot covers. They soon discover there is more action in stirring, peeling, and decorating with foods on the counter. Children are attracted to the changes in textures and colors in a blender or a pot. They remind adults how exciting the kitchen is. The more kids are invited to participate in the kitchen, the better prepared they are as artists in any media. Early lessons about color, form, and design abound in the kitchen, and sensibilities with foods shape a child's artistic pursuits for a lifetime. Any art room can become a "kitchen." In this article, the author presents some recipes that are invented by art-class chefs. He suggests that art teachers can help to avoid early decline of kitchen interests by supporting art-room kitchen works, and encouraging children to resume creative roles in home kitchens. (ERIC).
