Abstract | Every college and university institutional advancement office would like to point to eminent alumni, living or deceased, as part of the institution's cultural legacy. However, little is known about the dynamics of how eminent alumni influence the reputations of their alma maters, particularly in the age of the internet. Has the internet created a new set of conditions that can level the playing field, providing new opportunities for younger institutions with few claims to eminent alumni? Or does the internet merely magnify advantages that older, well-established and endowed institutions already enjoy? This paper addresses this issue with new data on the internet visibility of institutions and their most eminent alumni, that is, US presidents. (As Provided). |
