Abstract"Campuses in general are paying much more attention to sustainability," says Paul Rowland, executive director of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, which is dedicated to empowering colleges and universities to lead the sustainability transformation in society. Rowland says that in the past four years AASHE has grown from 40 institutional members to more than 900. Although he doesn't know all of the reasons for this growth, he attributes some of the expansion to ardent interest from potential students. Colleges and universities are capitalizing on the current interest in the sustainability movement as a way to engage alumni. According to Rowland, "alumni are, in greater numbers, indicating that this is an important topic and that they want to know that their university is taking this subject seriously." In this article, the author discusses how colleges and universities are forging ahead with green initiatives, including events, virtual networking opportunities, and career- and student-focused programming.
