Abstract | School business officials' days are filled with numbers and reports--audits, balance sheets, check registers, financial statements, journal entries, vouchers, and warrant reports, just to name a few. Those are all important tools that school business officers use to manage the financial resources of the district effectively. However, they are also responsible for managing human resources. Most of them are not born with keen management skills; those skills need to be learned, nurtured, and practiced over time. In this article, the author provides some practical suggestions to improve school business officers' management skills. If they can remember a few simple steps--(1) communicate; (2) motivate; (3) educate; (4) delegate; (5) celebrate; and (6) recreate--they can make significant progress toward the effective management of their people.
