Abstract | In recent years, regulatory boards have been asked to implement procedures to evaluate the competency of licensees throughout their careers, but the implementation of such competency measures is not on the immediate horizon. The responsibility for continuing competency, therefore, lies with each counselor. The work of Vygotsky is put forth as a developmental framework for conceptualizing the scaffolding of continuing competency through mentoring, supervision, consultation, professional involvement, advocacy and self care. Counselor educators and supervisors are encouraged to both model and emphasize continuing competency scaffolding elements in training and supervision. (As Provided). |
