Abstract	This brief paper captures only a glimpse of the faceted experiences of Alabama State College Laboratory School's students, teachers, and administrators during a period of dramatic societal changes. It is a response to the call for more scholarship in the history of Black education during this period and for case studies of schools that demonstrated a strong community and academic achievement in the face of White oppression and grossly inequitable funding. It is the aim of this paper to bring this case study of Lab School to the forefront, to affect a more complete historical rendering of segregated schools for African Americans during segregation. Alabama State College Laboratory School embraced the Du Bois philosophy that "Education must not simply teach work--it must teach life" (Du Bois 1903, 33). The oral histories collected and the legacy of its graduates' successes attest to the fact that Lab School was an institution of high academic standards and achievement. Lab School, educating African American youth in a tumultuous, changing society, succeeded in its mission to develop conscientious democratic citizens who not only went on to further their education, but also constructively contribute to the society in which they live(d).
