Abstract | Sixteen superintendents from the Southern Gulf Coast area were interviewed regarding their perceptions of the connection of ISLLC Standard One to practice. A comprehensive analysis of superintendent responses to questions related to five research questions suggests 11 major themes. Superintendents discussed the importance of vision, data-driven decision making, communication, purposeful change, maintenance of positive relationships, collaboration, systems management, instructional leadership, balance, politics of leadership, and the importance of interpreting trends to make decisions for the future. The three themes cutting across responses to all questions most often are communication, vision, and the importance of understanding political undercurrents of a superintendent's leadership.
