AbstractMedia centers have been transformed from warehouses for books and equipment into the hub of the learning community. Media specialists keep the hub functioning properly. If school library media specialists are doing their job well, they are making a difference in the ways teachers teach and in the ways students learn. On any given day, a media specialist performs a wide variety of roles that serve to strengthen the entire school community. Given all of the responsibilities and challenges that school library media specialists face daily, role clarification is needed. "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs" embodies the goals for school library media programs and defines the roles of the library media specialist as leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator. In this article, the author takes a look at the different roles of a school library media specialist. (Contains 2 charts and 1 figure.) (ERIC).
