AbstractThe author recently attended a symposium on engaged scholarship and activism. Folks in attendance were inspired. The author was the lone holdout for despair. Perhaps the author's expectations were skewed but, as impressive as the presentations were, she could not help but feel that she was seeing and hearing that "engaged scholarship" happened outside the university, that it was most aptly a matter of engaging scholarly tools in activist settings. Can one in fact perform scholarship that may carry with it implications of activism or acting on/in relation to systemic injustice from within the university? Or, as the symposium seemed to suggest, is that not only too much to ask but insufficient to the task? In this article, the author wonders about this from the position of having been propelled into the middle of what she has come to call a "performance movement." She shares her experience in developing a course that would work in partnership with area African American churches to pursue related questions. She stresses that the productivity of the larger effort with whatever name one may wish to call it--engaged scholarship, community-based research, performance ethnography--may be counted in this: a small, passing incident, incidental to planning, production, and publication, that required people to incorporate new ways of thinking, being, and speaking. She contends that one has to change and yield in order to accommodate not only the promises of engaged scholarship but the implications for integrity and "justness" in which it must be rooted.
