AbstractNASPE recommends children ages 5-12 accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day of the week. With the growing occurrence of obesity in the United States, it is clear that too many of America's youth are not meeting the recommended amount of daily physical activity. Given that America's youth are having problems meeting daily physical activity recommendations, many health proponents are turning to the school system to curb the occurrence of obesity. Schools are becoming the key factor that can ensure access to at least some opportunities for physical activity. At a time when physical activity is becoming more and more recognized as pertinent to the well-being of the youth, schools are decreasing the amount of time allotted for physical education and physical activity time (e.g., recess). Recess, if utilized properly, could provide an important part of each and every day's physical activity. To fully utilize recess for the accumulation of daily physical activity, a program was developed to maximize activity during recess time at an elementary school in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Adventure Challenge program was developed to increase the physical activity engagement of elementary students within the regular school day, particularly during recess time, with the ultimate goal of walking across America with classmates and teachers. In this project, 2nd and 3rd grade students were invited to take part in the challenge. The four components of the six-week program included: (1) recess activity time; (2) the logistics of step recording; (3) mapping, tracking, and mileage; and (4) teachers, faculty and staff involvement. This article provides the description of the four components. (Contains 1 figure.) (ERIC).
