AbstractAdults are returning to college. Adult students are considered and consequently labeled nontraditional. Traditional colleges and universities are just beginning to understand nontraditional adult learners' desires and demands within higher education, and many are tailoring programs and services to meet the needs of this emerging population of students. Northern Arizona University (NAU), for example, is dedicated to serving nontraditional adult learners and caters to them through a variety of degree and certificate programs. The author believes that nontraditional adult students need to feel part of a campus community. Unable to participate in sports, club or other extracurricular activities, nontraditional adult students must feel a connection to campus. Well-designed cohort programs can help weave nontraditional adult students into the fabric of the institution. NAU's commitment to a complex and changing society and to its significant population of nontraditional adult students has resulted in many student successes. (ERIC).
