Abstract | Alternative routes to the licensure of school principals are controversial. These researchers found that superintendents, as gatekeepers in the employment of principals, consider a complex set of conditions surrounding the candidate, the superintendent, and the school district in their decisions to hire principals who gained credentials through alternative routes. Superintendents are likely to hire alternatively licensed principals, regardless of the alternative route taken ("inside" or "outside" education), if they perceive candidates to be capable of leading the instructional program within a school, they have a favorable attitude toward alternative licensure of personnel generally, they have had previous experience in hiring alternatively licensed principals, and they perceive the school community as willing to accept an alternatively licensed principal.
