Abstract	Art teachers need to experiment with new techniques and materials in order to keep their art instruction fresh, and to avoid becoming droning bores with tired, repetitive projects. Usually it only takes a brief flip through any art-supply catalog for an art teacher to happen onto some previously unknown material that will inspire them and--when worked into a project--will consequently motivate a classroom full of art students. Thus, it was those very inexpensive expanded-polystyrene (EPS) faces/half-heads that became the catalyst for tremendously creative bas-relief art projects. The project aims to inspire students to work beyond the flat surface of a piece of paper, and to begin to deal with the idea of texture, structure and sculpture. The basic supplies needed are plain white EPS half-heads with bland, mask-like faces and small rectangles of sturdy cardboard--very low-cost supplies. This is one project that literally faces up to the challenge of motivating high-school art students to explore the world of sculpture. (ERIC).
