Abstract | This article reports findings from a study of England's most improved academy, a high school in a former mining community serving a designated social priority area. The correlation between academic success and character education based upon the core values of the school is reported with reference to quantitative and qualitative data obtained from a funded research project (2007-2008) of which the author was the principal investigator. Similarities and differences between well-respected character education advocated in the United States and that engaged in at the case study academy in the United Kingdom are evaluated. Attention is drawn to the importance of students understanding and interpreting the sources of the character education and core values upon which their schooling is founded. It is argued that seeking to shape a student's character without helping that young person to understand the sources upon which that character education is based, fails to model the honesty and integrity characteristic of quality character education. Consequently, greater transparency regarding the Judeo-Christian sources of character education in the United States and United Kingdom is advocated. (As Provided). |
