AbstractThis article presents a commentary exchange between authors Laurie Grobman and Richard C. Raymond regarding Raymond's article "Re-placing Lit in Comp II: Pragmatic/Humanistic Benefits." Grobman said that in her brief commentary on Raymond's article, she chooses not to explicitly address his thesis that literature belongs in a research-based writing course. Rather, she comments on the rigorous, scaffolded research process he outlines so that students engage in genuine inquiry about literature and the questions it yields. She describes Raymond's "researching the conflicts" approach, and presents some researched essays students write in his courses, which may give readers some very good answers about re-placing literature in composition. Raymond applauds Grobman's emphasis on collaboration and publication. However, he wonders if Grobman has gone a bit too far in designing these marvelous topics. He is guessing that some well-placed journaling and journal exchanges would provide scaffolding enough for students to find their own questions, their own sense of problems that need to be solved.
