AbstractLeadership, regardless of definition, cannot be taught by a textbook alone, and if educators are to embrace the idea of highly engaged, holistic classrooms for Millennials, they must teach students to participate in real changes as both leaders and followers through practice and experiences. As new generations of young people mature and enter higher education, educators must adapt their teaching methodologies through an examination of theory and research related to generational differences. This is necessary as well for faculty who teach in formal leadership degree programs. In this article, the authors focus on the current generation of undergraduate students, often referred to as the Millennial generation, and assert experiential education is particularly well suited to undergraduate leadership education programs given its focus on active learning.
