Abstract	Five years after the Government announced plans to replace the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), the author anticipates the arrival of the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Now the new Qualifications and Credit Framework is a reality. The regulatory arrangements for the QCF came into force on 1 September 2008 and the governments of England, Wales and Northern Ireland have agreed an implementation programme that will see a rapid transition from the NQF over the next couple of years, followed by continued expansion of the QCF over a 10-year period. In the first instance, implementation will focus on vocational qualifications, but the Government has proposed that general qualifications should also be brought into the QCF by 2013. The QCF is a radical departure from the NQF, with many positive design features that build on this previous credit tradition. Despite the uncertainties and the problems of meeting the initial transition deadline from the NQF, the QCF has the potential over time to deliver all the benefits expected of it. The author concludes that once the initial phase of transition of vocational qualifications is complete, attention will shift to the development of general qualifications within the QCF--a process that will take to 2014 to complete.
