Abstract | Electronic reference resources are expanding traditional print reference collections far beyond the walls of the library building. While the library literature has seen a debate rage about the various merits and pitfalls of electronic reference sources, no one disputes they are here to stay. As more of the library content becomes available through the Internet, librarians can explore more complex technological solutions that make these sources apparent to their users. Librarians have always known the value and importance of reference works for researchers, but these sources often fly under the radar of many patrons who may see the reference area simply as an inconvenient collection of books that don't circulate. Ironically, while electronic reference works have increased the number, variety, and accessibility of librarians' holdings, patrons may be even less aware of them because they reside behind the privileged walls of library's proxy servers. In this article, the author discusses various methods of creating more awareness about electronic reference materials: (1) the online catalog; (2) federated searching; (3) guides, lists, web pages; (4) mixing print and electronic; and (5) marketing and promotion.
