Abstract | This article discusses the use of distance courses as an in-service training mechanism for early childhood personnel. The authors evaluated the efficacy of the in-service, satellite based distance course HeadsUp! Reading (HU!R). The analysis of HU!R data revealed that there were no initial differences in the Language and Literacy Early Childhood: Knowledge Measure scores of the 62 HU!R course and 29 comparison participators who did not attend the satellite-based course. However, by May 2002, a significant difference (p less than 0.0001) in scores between the HU!R and the comparison groups occurred. Similar results were found between a second cohort of participants in 2003. Based on our HU!R findings and a review of the literature on distance courses, we offer suggestions for training entities and policymakers in using distance ITV courses as viable options for in-service training of adult learners in the early childhood education field.
