AbstractVarious government initiatives have highlighted the importance of employer engagement in schools, further education and higher education. However, speaking as a team of lecturers in HE the authors have found that there is a tension between the perceptions of government and those of employers. Clearly, it would be a good thing if, particularly in applied degrees, the needs of employers were fully taken into account in both design and delivery. However, the language of HE is not that of employers and that can create communication problems. Alongside this, employers are keen to have degrees which train students appropriately for their setting but they don't necessarily feel they can engage fully in the design and implementation of these degrees. Indeed, many employers don't even know they can have a role in foundation degree design. This article looks at how a team of foundation degree lecturers from Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln (BG) coped with the difficulties of engaging with a new group of employers when adding a strand to an existing foundation degree for learning practitioners.
