Abstract	In the nineteenth century, Spain was a backward, rural country. Catalonia, by contrast, was industrialising rapidly. Catalan workers suffered from poor wages, worse conditions, exploited child and female labour, and unfit housing. In 1909 Barcelona erupted in a whole week of general strike and riots against the sending of Catalan reservists to fight a colonial war in Morocco. Some 80 churches, monasteries and religious schools were destroyed. The death-toll reached 83. The government needed a scapegoat, and found one in Francesc Ferrer, a high-profile libertarian and anti-religious educator. Despite an international campaign, he was tried and executed. In this article, the author reflects on the legacy of Francesc Ferrer, an anarchist and founder of Barcelona's influential Modern School, who believed that education could create "a revolution in people's hearts."
