Abstract | Asylum is a value. At its most basic, it is about the importance of protecting someone's life from persecution. The 1951 Refugee Convention seeks to achieve this--by ensuring that those people with a well-founded fear of persecution should be able to find protection within a state that has signed up to the Convention. The UK's commitments under the 1951 Convention mean that asylum should not be viewed as part of a managed economic migration strategy. Refugees are forced to flee, often at short notice and without personal possessions, and may have limited control over which country they end up in. As a result, the UK must ensure that people are able to seek asylum here and be part of a properly supported asylum process. This article makes the case that such an asylum system needs to include English language provision for newly arrived asylum seekers. (ERIC). |
