Abstract | As the nation works through a lingering recession, community colleges are pulled in two very different directions. On one hand is opportunity, as skyrocketing numbers of students--some right out of high school, others eager to retool old skills or immerse themselves in new job-enhancement training--beat a path to their doors. On the other is frustration, as anemic state budgets make it tough to keep pace with rising demand. Despite these and other challenges, many colleges are forging ahead, looking for ways to capitalize on a higher national profile. Where traditional funding has dried up, institutions are reaching out to local businesses, exploring new enrollment strategies, or tapping alumni for help--whatever it takes to keep the momentum going. Maine Community College System president John Fitzsimmons says colleges must not overthink the process as they search for ways to accommodate new students. They need to talk to leaders at other community colleges, evaluate best practices in the industry, and determine if those strategies might work for them. (ERIC). |
