Abstract	In nature, waves are transmitters of energy. Once the energy moves through the medium, that medium often returns to its previous state. The first wave of community-engaged institutions has transmitted great energy across the U.S. higher education system. And in contrast to what occurs in nature, these classified institutions often do not go back to the way they were before the designation. Just like waves in the ocean, the Carnegie classified institutions reviewed in this volume are unique and are exhibiting constant motion, new shapes and forms, and the potential to transform their environments. Indeed, transition is one of the major themes evident throughout the chapters. Whether in leadership, promotion and tenure policies and practice, or fundraising, many of the campuses indicated that they had made progress but envisioned additional change. To provide predictability and reliability, the Carnegie framework was only minimally revised in the 2008 classification round and will not be changed for the next round as well. Nevertheless, in anticipation of the continuing wave of change, the authors offer considerations in institutional practice and potential adjustments in the framework that may be considered for future classification efforts. The authors hope that the energy created by this first collective wave of classified institutions, as well as those recently classified, will inspire continuous change and forward motion in the nationwide efforts to heighten the value and focus on higher education engagement.
