AbstractThis essay focuses of an arts-informed inquiry performed by sixteen pre-service teachers who created sculptures to explore their teaching philosophies. Through this creative process changes occurred in their assumptions and expectations about what is of value in teaching and relationships between themselves, their students, and the community. The ideas of philosopher Michel Serres are used to analyze the themes that emerged from this creative process. Specifically, I examine the relationships between three of Serres' key themes: (1) prepositions, (2) spaces "in-between", and (3) noise, and how aesthetic forms of expression such as creating sculptures open alternative pathways for pre-service teachers to imagine or re-envision transformative pedagogies.
