| Abstract | The climate in higher education today is one of cutbacks, setbacks and fiscal struggles. One of the first areas in which a college or university, indeed any business, looks to make adjustments in times of financial difficulty is in compensation and benefit programs. Conversely, employees today value compensation and benefit programs to a greater extent than in the past, and become unsettled and anxious when these programs are threatened. The issue of compensation and benefits must be handled gingerly to keep both employee and employer content. This article provides a framework that helps HR professionals in colleges and universities to think about the most effective package of monetary and nonmonetary rewards for motivating performance, attracting and retaining talent, and maintaining employee morale.
