AbstractJudith Butler is a renowned and prolific scholar who is both the Maxine Elliot Professor in Rhetoric and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley and the Hannah Arendt Professor of Philosophy at the European Graduate School. In a substantial lead essay in the "London Review of Books," she examines whether charges of anti-Semitism are appropriately lodged against those whose expressive acts target the state of Israel and its policies. Because Judith Butler holds endowed chairs in rhetoric and philosophy, her pronouncements might be expected to convey some important lessons. Lawrence A. Lengbeyer is disappointed to find, however, that in her deconstruction of remarks on bigotry by Harvard president Lawrence Summers, Butler commits at least four elementary fallacies: Straw Man, Slippery Slope, Equivocation, and False Dilemma. Butler's article displays a celebrated rhetorician's inability to extract the most obvious, accessible meaning from a not terribly sophisticated text, as well as a supposed philosopher's inability to avoid basic missteps of logic.
