| Abstract | Early childhood instruction and the experiences that accompany can serve life-long lessons. Depriving children of education during this critical period in life can have significant consequences on cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical development. This article features one of the forerunners to special education, Michael Anagnostopoulos (1837-1906). Anagnostopoulos, who became known as Anagnos, established the Kindergarten for the Blind. In this article, the author describes how Anagnos conceived the idea of organizing a kindergarten for the blind and the numerous contributions he made to the history of educational ideas. In recognition of the Kindergarten for the Blind and his humanitarian achievements, Anagnos received the honorary degree of Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1892. Anagnos' kindergarten, which was his special monument and greatest contribution to the history of blind education, earned him the title "the father of the kindergarten school for the sightless." (ERIC). |
