Abstract | The "Versant Spanish[TM] Test" applies state-of-the-art technology to language assessment in a quick and efficient tool designed for the purpose of "assessing an individual's ability to speak and understand spoken Spanish". According to the developers, the Pearson Education Group, the test is equally useful in academic as well as professional contexts, and herein, perhaps, is its main weakness. They claim that the test may be used not only as a measure of "proficiency," but also for educational and professional "placement," as well as "achievement," as both a developmental and exit measure. In this article, the authors discuss these claims, but first they provide an overview of the test. (ERIC). |
