Abstract | School administrators continue to use zero-tolerance policies as a one-size-fits-all, quick-fix solution to curbing discipline problems with students. Originally intended to address serious offenses such as possession of firearms, zero-tolerance policies are also now meant to address fighting and disrespect. Despite the seeming popularity of zero-tolerance policies, the evidence base is lacking. The literature suggests that zero-tolerance has flaws and school districts and administrators have misused it. When implemented, it typically equates to exclusion through suspension and expulsion: two disciplinary actions that have well-documented side effects. Researchers have indicated that there are alternatives to zero-tolerance that school administrators can use to curb discipline problems. The author discusses the history of zero-tolerance policies, its effectiveness, and alternatives. (As Provided). |
