Abstract | When the author retired from teaching after thirty-seven years, he had taught elementary school, junior high school, and thirty years at Johns Hopkins University. He always loved being in the classroom with his students. They energized him, inspired him, humbled him, and taught him in many ways. He learned more from them than they learned from him. Reflecting on all of his classroom experiences, he wanted to offer a tribute to the teaching profession by crafting a metaphor that would hopefully span time and resonate with others who are contemplating a teaching career or those who continue to teach after many colleagues have retired. Selecting a theme from the musical "A Chorus Line," the author discusses "putting it on the line" and what it means to offer mind, body, heart and soul in teaching and in life. (ERIC). |
