Abstract | In this article, the author presents three themes that can form the basis for exciting world language instruction in Spanish, French, and Chinese at any grade level. These three themes (the prehistoric world; endangered species; and space exploration) use basic science as a context for communication that generates student excitement and enthusiasm about listening and speaking in the target language. Before outlining these ideas, the author stresses that language acquisition should always be the primary focus of any foreign language class, and the language functions that students develop here should still consist of useful vocabulary, structures, and phrases that children can use outside the classroom.
