| Abstract | Engineering is one of the oldest professions, dating back to humanity's early times. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were all primarily feats of engineering. Most also had profound social/cultural impacts. Engineers are agents of change, devotees of capitalism, and dreamers of the possible. They are also in a unique position to work with the schools, helping them to provide essential education to all students. Integrating the curricula, a major thrust in all national school systems, calls for a multidimensional problem-solving mindset--integrating and blending both the technical and the nontechnical aspects of a problem. This is exactly what engineers do all day, and their real-world experiences are rich ore to be mined in the classroom. In this article, the author suggests activities that can introduce students to the field of engineering, along with a variety of ways to bring practicing engineers into the classroom. (ERIC). |
