Abstract | If everyone needs an education through two years of college or the equivalent, then the nation has an obligation to provide a far more certain pathway for postsecondary success than it does now. Because so many young people fail to complete the final years of high school, graduate but do not apply to college, or begin postsecondary education only to drop out within the first few semesters, the transition years from high school to college take on great importance in increasing the degree attainment rates of U.S. young people. There are a number of ways to increase high school graduation rates and put more students on the path to and through college. One strategy for ensuring that more students will complete high school and earn a postsecondary credential is to provide young people the option to do college-level work in high school. These accelerated learning options can serve as an on-ramp to college for underprepared students and a fast track for those already college bound. Approaches serving the former group are the subject discussed in this chapter. First, the authors describe three accelerated learning options: (1) traditional dual enrollment; (2) dual enrollment pathways; and (3) early college schools. The authors then present minicases of the latter two options, discuss the responses of young people to these new opportunities, and briefly review the evidence that such options can do what they claim: increase college success. Finally, the authors summarize some lessons learned by Jobs for the Future, their organization, about this work. (ERIC). |
